The business world moves so fast, we can never afford to stop learning.
This course will teach you how to start and grow your business. Participants will also enjoy networking with other people who are starting or running businesses.
During these seven, three-hour sessions, participants will learn how to manage, market and finance their businesses, with a focus on writing a business plan.
This class is designed for business owners, start-ups, and for individuals participating in the Washington Department of Employment SEAP program.
This course is a joint offering of the Washington Business Center and the Black Dollar Days Task Force.
Session One: Introduction
What is an entrepreneur? What does it mean to be a business owner? Feasibility and business planning, key components of a business plan, leadership and business ethics
Session Two: Marketing –
The 4 P's and 2 C's! Customers/prospects, competition/industry;
The 4 P's: Product/service, price, promotions and place (distribution); market research
Session Three: Marketing II
Competitive matrix, finding a niche market; selling-customer service; Internet/E- commerce; developing a marketing plan
Session Four: Financials
Money management, financial statements, recordkeeping (intro to Quick Books), budgeting, cash flow projections and management
Session Five: Financing Your Business
Business planning and financing success, equity versus debt, when to seek financing; 5 Cs - financing criteria: conventional banks vs. alternative lenders; preparing a loan application
Session Six: Human Resource Management
Managing employees (organizational chart, delegation, employee manuals, job descriptions, hiring process and employee evaluations); labor laws; employment taxes
Session Seven: Managing Time and Business Growth
Design and grow your business so you can take a vacation!
One-on-one business counseling for class participants is provided at no additional charge by the Washington Business Center.
